The 30th Season!

Last season New York Philomusica took a detailed look at the work of Joseph Haydn, one of the preeminent composers of the Classical period. In 2008-2009, the ensemble builds on that theme, opening with a bold choice: Haydn’s opera L’isola disabitata. Thus far the group has explored this highly original man’s work in all musical realms of interest to him, except, until now, for his operas. The New York Philomusica proves that it is as versatile as the composer it honors, inviting some of the country’s finest up-and-coming singers for an unforgettable season opener.

There follows a series of three concerts that continue to show the diversity of programming that has become one of New York Philomusica’s hallmarks. The season brings back old favorites Beethoven, Mozart and more Haydn, and mixes those in with Copland, Debussy, Dvorák, and Featured Composer Michael Berkeley. The concerts aim to showcase both the amazing solo talents of New York Philomusica musicians and their ability to balance each other perfectly as an ensemble.

New York listeners “in the know” follow New York Philomusica for the thoughtful programming, varied repertoire and talented musicians brought from the world over to create the perfect blend. The ensemble’s wide appeal continues in the 2008-2009 season, with a little something for everyone, from classics to works that will assuredly someday become classics, presented by supremely talented musicians in an intimate space that brings the audience as close as possible to the music.

JOSEPH HAYDN L’isola disabitata

Based on a 1754 text by the eminent poet Pietro Metastasio, the dramatic story of shipwreck, pirates, and true love has been set by no fewer than 30 composers.


II. Saturday, December 6, 2008, 8PM
